If I Were Fire edition by Heloise West Romance eBooks Reviews

Gorgeous, adventurous, and lush with exquisite settings that transported me to a dark, moody Italy of old, I found this story truly enchanting. The tale holds an amazing amount of depth and vision for a book of this length. I found it well-paced and tremendously satisfying and immediately rushed to see what else this new-to-me author had written. But on to what I loved about this story…

The blurb captures the premise perfectly, but what really captivated me was the author’s ability to sweep me fully into another time. A time where war, poverty, wealth, and cruelty touched the lives of nobles and serfs alike; a time of thieves and plague, where beauty and peace could morph to greed and violence at the turn of a misspoken phrase. From the opening page I was surrounded by the stink and clogging dankness of the underbelly of 18th century Italy, and I loved it! Honestly, I felt like I had stepped into any one of Caravaggio’s provocative and moody paintings. And the lead characters only enhanced that sentiment.

To my eye, Count Masello held a touch of wild gypsy in his bearing, which played wonderfully against his emotional angst and lent him the air of an Italian Bryon. And young Amadeo’s spontaneous spirit and fiery temper are well-balanced by his quick intelligence, melancholic regret, and his yearning to be a better man. I enjoyed inhabiting both of these smoking hot Italians. Their delightful Chip and Dale approach to love was charming and very entertaining and played out wonderfully against the vivid darker tale of blackmail and thievery. I highly recommend this romantic and spirited adventure of two courageous men finding a second chance at happiness amidst the splendor of old Italy.

Thank you, Heloise West, for sharing this captivating romance short… Lovely!

“Atmospheric, Lush, Enthralling!”
Set in 18th century Italy, Heloise West's "If I Were Fire" is a short story about two men who weren't supposed to meet that day. But due to circumstances that included a shady criminal, they do. Conte Salvesto Masello, who tries to keep up appearances of wealth but is selling his family heirlooms and barely holding onto his farm, meets Amadeo Neruccio wastrel, gambler and sodomite who is being sold into debt bondage and forced prostitution.

Salvesto makes a hasty decision to save the beautiful young Amadeo and becomes his master. The story then details the day, we get to learn about walking through the town, visit a doctor, learn about Salvesto's family heirlooms and the mystery surrounding them.

Here I felt the story sort of dragged and the focus was spent more of the research than the relationship or the main characters. By 40% the day ends, then it time jumps so severely wounded Amadeo is healed. And there seems to be a start of a bond formed, more than master/servant though both try to fight it.

But the time jump works against the development, or the semblance of one, for me.

The story reads like a lot of research for the time period went into it. The author made sure to detail the artwork, the society and country life. But it read stiff at times and sections came off awkward. I wasn't as invested in either main character as I'd hoped to be. There were parts told like Amadeo's bad boy past or even being tricked by Gulfetto, the story's villain instead of shown to the reader. I wish it was, it would have went a long way for me.

Salvesto and Amadeo seem like interesting enough characters. The premise was a cool concept. If this story was longer, preferably developing the bond for the romance so it wouldn't read as quick as it did. The action part finished rather quickly and the ending is HFN. And the sudden resolution to the debt situation between the men which was downplayed to begin with. Length and development could have been more effective.

This was a first time read for me from this author. I'd try her again because it wasn't bad. I think readers who like prefer sedate historicals with a touch of romance could enjoy this.

Plus, it's definitely a different take than the usual British historical romance. Viva la Italia!
I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Conte Salvesto Masello is trying to save his family villa from creditors by selling off his family heirlooms. His father had gone mad and run up the debts Salvesto is trying to repay. Even worse, Salvesto hasn’t been able to locate some of the most valuable pieces of art work his father had hidden. Now, Salvesto is force to sell off his mother’s silver to one of the local pawnbrokers, Guelfetto. While dealing with the pawnbroker, Amadeo lands at his feet.
Amadeo made a bargain to rig the palio races for his contrade. When he didn’t lose as planned, his family kicked him out and refused to help him with his gambling debts. Guelfetto has Amadeo taken hostage and plans to sell him to their enemies, the Florentines. Instead, Salvesto pays his ransom with the last of his mother’s silver. Money that was supposed to go to pay off the villa.
Now the two must find a way to save the villa and along the way, they find each other.
This book may be a short and quick read, but it’s very action packed. Over all it’s an enjoyable read, with good pacing and great descriptions. It could have been just a little nicer if it were a bit longer with some added depth.
The author’s descriptions built a captivating setting and transported me back to the 18th century. Both main characters were realistic and their stories captivating; and the author did a great job insuring that their relationship formed naturally, but in an original way. The plot was filled with suspense, intrigue, and deception keeping the reader on their toes. I look forward to reading more stories by this author.
