Quentin Case is a writer of pulp fiction and action heroes in New York City, but mostly his life involves getting to the next rent check. All that changes when he dies and finds himself transported to a world that seems to be Hell. Literally. However something changed in Quentin when he crossed over. He is angry at being where he ended up and he plans to fight demon and devil alike to hang onto his small piece of humanity.

Hell seems deceptively—normal. Nonetheless, this is a world where human souls are the torture toys of demons and manipulated by psychotic magical beings. Many lost souls have withdrawn to being little more than tormented automatons. Somehow, Quentin has found a small group of souls living precariously off the grid. He has found companionship, even love.

There is pain, sudden violence and dark magic here. Quentin is determined to mount a revolution and take the fight to the devil himself if he has to. However, unless Quentin can learn this world's secrets, he and the small group of souls he has allied himself with will learn that there are worse things than dying.

A blend of horror, science fiction and high adventure, this is a gritty fantasy story with character, humor and twists and turns that will intrigue and astonish you.

Hard Case Quentin Case Book 1 eBook John Hook

I must admit, I wasn't sure this was going to be my cup of tea (in terms of genre), but as I read it, I became more intrigued and enthralled with the story world Hook has created here. His main character is funny where he should be funny, serious where he should be serious, and is thoroughly engaging and believable. In fact, I'd say Hook's characters are drawn so well that I accepted the crazy plot twists and the world in general without effort.

I love when I continue to think about a story and its implications after I finish reading it. This is one of those books.

And, happily, it has just enough open ends and questions left for me to hope for a sequel (without seeming as if the story is left hanging).

Great first effort from this author! Will look for more as he can crank 'em out....

Hard Case Quentin Case Book 1 eBook John Hook Reviews

I really enjoyed reading Hard Case by John Hook. I'm very impressed (and maybe a little disturbed ;-) )by the depth of his creativity and imagination. I don't take much time to read fiction, but I'm glad this was the inaugural book for my new Paperwhite. I've just started reading Hard Corps, and it's looking like another winner!
But once you know it's dark, hey why not enjoy it? It's well written and easy to read. The protagonist is awesome. I enjoyed it and quickly moved on to the sequel.
John Hook takes the reader on a emotional rollercoaster ride to Hell that is addictive, thought provoking, entertaining, and a privilege to read. You cannot put the book down! It is so well written that the words flow like poetry. The character development is careful, calculated, and in doing so, makes not only the people very real, but also the world of Hell in which they live. John Hook is a gifted writer that truly competes and ranks up there with Stephen King. I can see this easily being made into a TV series for HBO or Showtime. I cannot wait for his next book to come out.
I found this book very enjoyable. There was lots of action and quite a bit of mystery. Any time you have a story set in Hell, you have to figure out the rules. This book slowly reveals them through the protagonist in an organic way. This keeps the book from being too exposition heavy. That leaves a lot of time for action. There is hardly a page or two of downtime till something new and exciting happens. The characterization (especially of the minor character) takes a hit due to plot driven nature of the book. But overall, there is a great economy to this book that makes things flow so well. Before you know it, you reached the end and really want to see what could happen in this world next.
Hard Case is an exceedingly original story that keeps your attention from beginning to end. This is the first book in quite awhile that I read through so quickly. I just could not put it down. It has just the right combination of action, adventure and captivating story world that serve to keep you engrossed. The book is certainly meant for an adult audience, but there is nothing in it that does not belong. Nothing about the content is gratuitous; the violence and minimal sexual content serve to move the story forward and drive home the brutality of the story world. All in all this was a fast paced and enjoyable read. I highly recommend it and hope we can expect more from this author soon.
Take Jack Reacher. Add some Alice in Wonderland. A spoonful of 'Q' from 'Star Trek'. Some traditional fight between Good and Evil. A taste of 'Goodfellas'. Mix thoroughly with spirit of adventure, then allow to ferment for as long as it takes in a mind that likes to pick up stones to see what's in the dirt of our human psyche.

If you're lucky, you get John Hook's 'Hard Case'. An absolutely absorbing trip into what could be Hell. Or one of them. Or several, because we get to visit a few.

That's one of the things about this novel. A reviewer usually has to be careful not to give too much of the plot away when discussing a book. But the reluctant journey of the protagonist--a writer, Quentin Case--takes so many twists and turns that it would be folly to even try and synopsise this story. Thing is, the suspension of disbelief is so successfully managed that every shift makes sense. And even if you're not a fan of science fiction and fantasy, the thriller element is gripping.

This is a yarn. A good one, well told. I'm reminded of some of those great stories I engaged with more than five decades ago from the likes of Asimov and his peers, who brought me to strange worlds. Also of the classics like 'Gulliver's Travels' and 'Treasure Island' which I had read before I turned six. And later my absorption into the gangster mind through the works of Erle Stanley Gardener and others who currently include Michael Connolly and Lee Child. From his bibliography I get a feeling that John Hook might be of the same vintage as me, so all that makes sense.

One of the greatest of the many gifts my late parents gave me was an early love of reading and books. From those first hardback Hamlyn Classics through to the publishing world of has been a long and fascinating journey. But one thing has remained a constant. The telling of a good story in words only, so that the mind of the reader provides the pictures. John Hook is one of those still doing that.
In high school, we had to read Dante's Inferno and do a book report about it. It was written in some kind of 9th century prose that was difficult to get through but the message was clear there is no hope in Hell.

Fast forward to Quentin Case's version of Hell. It's more of a parallel dimension with different rules. The main character is a decent enough guy who finds himself sent downstairs for what appears to be a technicality. Upon arrival, he finds he can hold his own in some pretty tight spots and I guess this is probably what I enjoyed about the book most of all. He goes from mediocre private cop in this life to superhero-like powers in the next. For Quentin, Hell is not so bad. This was a fast paced fun book to read. Well done, John!
I must admit, I wasn't sure this was going to be my cup of tea (in terms of genre), but as I read it, I became more intrigued and enthralled with the story world Hook has created here.
