Elaine and John's book entered my life at a time when I simply knew hope was something I would never feel again. Their book has not only led me to the beauty of discovering hope but also the joy of living its meaning every day.
What I find most refreshing about their book is the love and warmth I feel in every reflection. It was clear from the outset that this book was not profit-driven or written because the authors thought it would be a quick way to become famous. It was written with passion and integrity, which is why the reader can only benefit from its content.
From the book's chapter set-up to its amazing message, "One in the Spirit" is filled with inspiration, wisdom and truth. I am happy to say that the authors are not trying to "fix" readers with fancy prose or platitudes. Instead I feel their experience and knowledge gently passed on to me in every page and in a way that immeasurably enriches my life.
It is obvious that John and Elaine are talented therapists as well as gifted writers. I am forever grateful that they have given me a daily and direct path to the blessings of peace and serenity and the wonderful gift called hope.
I highly recommend John and Elaine Leadem's new book, One in The Spirit, which is grounded in their own experience, their faith and their professional work with other recovering couples. It provides daily spiritual reflections around a weekly topic -- themes which are based in 12 step work and directed specifically to a recovering couple's relationship. The daily readings support and encourage couples who are practicing new and unfamiliar intimacy skills and courageously healing their most important relationships. One in the Spirit helps individuals and couples who want to establish consistent and honest communication and build the trust, connection and mutual respect they desire.
I have to be honest, my wife and I have started (and never finished) a number of "relationship booster" books, but ONE IN THE SPIRIT has fearlessly cut to the core of the core of the core of our issues. When we became serious about about our 12-step programs and being truly intimate with one another, we found this book which truly is a "relationship SPONSOR in print." I am not kidding-I often feel like the Leadems must have had hidden cameras in our home when they wrote this book. I feel like they really know us and they are addressing us personally through their writing. Sometimes its spooky! My wife and I use it several mornings per week (5-6) and we are truly learning and growing together. For example, I have grown up in church my whole life, but since we've started this book, my wife and I pray together almost everyday. Really pray. I just want to say that I think prayer is more intimate than sex. After 18 years of marriage, my usually quiet wife is sharing memories from a place I've never experienced with her before. I love that. My wife and I start everyday EARLY with coffee time and ONE IN THE SPIRIT. The format of the book is easy to follow. 52 weekly themes build on familiar aspects of recovery such as the promises or making amends with each day's reading utilizing a challenge, reflection and a prayer. Each Weekend Workshop contains notes from John and Elaine's personal experience and a challenge to "make a gift to the partnership." There is no fluff here. This book is designed to aid 12 Step couples in their effort to strengthen the spiritual and emotional bond in their relationship. It does just that and it works! I have their Step book also. They absolutely know recovery and they know relationships. These guys are a huge gift to the recovery community.
Too much therapy talk and not enough on spiritual insights through the journey. Get Rooted In God's Love by the Ryan's instead!!!
