Notes on usage with Paperwhite

Searching for words while reading a Japanese book will work as-is if you set this dictionary to be the default dictionary to use for Japanese books. To set this dictionary as the default got to Settings > Device Options > Language and Dictionaries > Dictionaries > Japanese and select this dictionary.

If you wish to use the Paperwhite's search box function (the magnifying glass icon) to search the dictionary outside of reading a book you must set your Paperwhite's language to be Japanese (Settings > Device Options > Language and Dictionaries > Language > Japanese). The search box (magnifying glass) is limited - it can only search dictionaries that are in the same source language as the currently set language.

I really like this dictionary and have been using it a lot as a pop-up dictionary to help with reading Japanese e-books, and also as a study dictionary with an electronic look up interface. It has a familiar feel, possibly because it is based on the famous WWWJDIC Online Dictionary Service that I have been using for years prior to purchasing my new Kindle Paperwhite. The database is huge and contains most of the words I encounter in my reading and studies. It also has great example sentences showing the search term in context. Since this dictionary was built and optimized for the Kindle Paperwhite, it's easy to use and the entries are formatted in a comfortable easy to read and browse format. At first I was having some trouble with a book I was trying to read and author helped me to discover that the e-book I had purchased had not been set up as an actual Japanese book and so it would not search for the Japanese default dictionary! Once the bug in the e-book was fixed, the dictionary worked just like the default English dictionary that comes with the reader, as a very fast pop-up reference when words are highlighted. This dictionary will help me open up a whole world of Japanese reading on my comfortable and easy to read Kindle Paperwhite, that I formerly could only do sitting in front of my computer. Many thanks to the author for publishing this great dictionary and for outstanding customer service and attention.

Japanese English Dictionary 16th Ed Japanese Edition edition by JeanChristian Imbeault Reference eBooks Reviews

I have been waiting for this dictionary a long time. It is a great help to read japanese books and newspapers on the kindle - just the words I don't know. Helps to study and improve my Japanese, and much faster than looking up a word in a dictionary.

Now that Apple has removed the Japanese English dictionary from ios6, this is where to go!

Based on the famous edict, so it covers all vocabulary I have come across til now.
I have been using this dictionary for some months now for reading Japanese books on the Paperwhite.

The good
The number of entries is just massive. I found explanations for very special and rare words in Katakana. Also, longer expressions are there, which helps to understand more complex sentences. It is fast and convenient.

The bad
Most of the Hiragana searches do not work, which is a big negative. To better understand how words or expressions are used in context, a proper dictionary in book form is still needed.

Conclusion
This dictionary massively supports me in reading Japanese books. Nevertheless improvements are necessary.
Really good tool, extremely useful for me. It's a bit expensive but I tried the other alternatives and they don't even come close to being as good as this one.

should include this along with the other pre-loaded dictionaries on the Paperwhite.
I gave it 5 stars because the little I used it, it did exactly what I wanted and what I expected. The native dictionary in the for Japanese does not give the information I needed as a non-native Japanese speaker.

I was planning to use this in combination with the Japanese Harry Potter ebooks to help my Japanese reading abilities. Sadly I realized afterwards that due to the furigana in the ebooks I was getting confused and lost.

The dictionary did exactly what it needed to though.
Tested on a Paperwhite. I could set it as the default Japanese dictionary, and it worked in the inline popup dictionary function.

Pros Since it is based on EDICT it has a decent number of entries, and it finds many idiomatic expressions (this is particularly nice).
Cons It is a somewhat amateurish conversion, it has trouble finding words from Kana (unless the word is commonly written in Kana). EDICT is free in other (non-)formats, so 9.99 does not look exactly cheap.

I think it would not work as the sole JP dictionary for a beginner, because of the Kana problems, but it was pretty useful for me (intermediate to advanced learner, so most stuff I'm trying to read is mostly in Kanji) because of the idiomatic expressions.

Well, in the end, I can say it was worth the 10 bucks for me.
