The necromancer stole her kingdom. Princess Ayla needs an army.

Bonemen prey on the innocent, kidnapping children to sell as slaves. The armies of Ravenhold are too war-torn to stop them.

There are too many for Ayla to fight alone.

The vagrant princess must overcome the odds with the tip of her bloody sword. If you like grimdark fantasy, grab "Forsaken".

So this was another short story I devoured in what felt like 5 minutes. It’s only 30 pages, so that might’ve been the case.

It’s basically about Ayla—a Princess but not the Disney kind—rescuing a group of children from slavers. It’s a quick introduction to her character, and a hello from a secondary character that I imagine will have a bigger role in upcoming books.

With this being so singularly focused and short, I think I’d be hard pressed not to like it. We’ve got a kickass female character. She doesn’t stand for children being taken as slaves. And she’s willing to tackle impossible situations she deems worthy. Unfortunately, the world is hardly explored at all. She’s exiled, there’s a king that’s not hers, but an ally, but not. Honestly, the king part lent more confusion than answers, but it’s a setup for the next story, I’m guessing; just a small bite of information. Without much more explored, it’s hard to talk about anything else.

The writing is smooth, the pacing great. Obviously so since I read it so quickly. My only negative is that it’s so short when it could have been drawn out just a tad bit more to make room for some more character/world building.

Overall, it’s a great introduction to an upcoming author and short story series. If you need something to read while dinner is cooking, give it a go.

Forsaken The Exiled Crown edition by Eric S Fomley Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

With Forsaken, Eric S. Fomley pens an ultra fast-paced story introducing his Princess of Grimdark Ayla. This badass heroine leaping off the pages at you, ready to rip out your throat with her bare hands. Her brutal presence and shadowy past instantly inspiring a deep desire to know more, More, MORE!

Be warned though, this first installment is very, very brief; a quick glimpse into Ayla’s brutal world, where intense combat and bloody death can happen any second. All of it written in a smooth, clean style which is easy to devour and can be enjoyed in a single sitting. But it isn’t meant to completely satisfy your grimdark yearns, rather it is very much like a tv episode where you are encouraged to immediately go on to the next to learn more, More, MORE!

The only complaint I can level at Forsaken is that it is too short. Once Ayla had me in her grip, I wanted to witness more of her visceral confrontations, learn more about her hidden history, and see where her path leads from this beginning. Alas, the vagrant princess released me too soon, disappearing back into the mist from whence she came.

As a sucker for quick, episodic fantasy, I’m optimistic about the future of Eric S. Fomley’s The Exiled Crown series. The fact that it is an unabashedly grimdark only makes me hunger more for the next installment. Really can’t wait to see where this new Princess of Grimdark goes from here.
It was a nice faced-paced story about a highly capable vagrant princess who seeks to bring justice. The short story was nice and the writing is quite good, but feels more like a prologue, so I can’t say too much about it, because it felt too short. When I finished reading I felt like “ok, and what now?”.

I’m not sure this marketing model of releasing a series of short stories is the right one. Selling it as a collection of few short stories might work better.
As for the narrator – he’s ok, not more than that.

3.5/5
Great, quick, piece of indy fiction. Very enjoyable, and very much in the vain of Mark Lawrence's Grimdark style. Worth the money for a quick read.
I have to admit I rarely spend time reading short stories, but this excellent story has convinced me that the genre has merit. The author did a spectacular job of capturing the look and feel of life in medieval times by using carefully chosen words. Additionally, he is able to communicate a lot in a short amount of time. Finally, the action sequences are fast and brutal, bringing to life the realities of hand to hand fighting. I definitely would recommend this to fans of medieval fantasy and short stories.
This was a great read. It looks to be the start of a great story. The author did a great job of packing a good amount of entertainment in this short story.

The main character was enjoyable and I found myself rooting for her, despite getting only a few pages to get to know her. The fight scene was beautifully written.

I am excited to see where this goes so I will definitely be moving on to the next book.
